Focus
For those new to a drawing tablet:
To become comfortable with using a drawing tablet, mixing colors, and the pressure sensitivity of the tablet.
For those more comfortable with the tablet:
Working with light and texture to blend your creature into a surrounding of your choice
Assignment
This is the second part of a two-part assignment where you will create a new background for your creature to inhabit.
If you are familiar with digital painting focus on blending the creature into a unified feeling background (even if the style of your painted background is different) using color and light to help you.
If you are new to the tablet and digital painting focus on creating unity through color and pattern. I am not expecting you to create a photorealistic environment as your first digital painting just make sure it feels like it somehow connects to your creature.
Some things to consider:
- If you are more comfortable with drawing in your sketchbook etc. You can create a guide or underdrawing which you will be able to scan in and use as a guide.
- The background can be more of a texture or pattern if you’re not comfortable with the tablet.
- Push yourself to make the background integrate as much as possible with your creature if you are comfortable.
- You can also paint layers in front of your creature to add depth.
Project requirements
While you will not get any additional points for doing the following, not doing them will result in a loss of points.
- The project should be at least 1080 pixels on its smallest size (bigger is fine).
- The project should be properly named as indicated in the ‘Naming Convention’ section at the top of this page.
- The project should be turned in to the homeroom Dropbox as a PSD file before class on the due date.
- All layers must be properly named.
- The project must be in color.
- You need to have your creature in the environment.
Technical requirements
These are required to show you understand and have used some of the tools and techniques demonstrated in class.
- Your use of brush weight while painting your background.
- Your use color mixing.
Theory requirements
While your project will show a number more design elements than listed below, these should be the ones you pay special attention to when creating the piece. When shown during critique they should be dominant.
- The unity of the piece. Even if you choose to go the texture route your painting should feel like it belongs with the creature.
- Your use of color to create unity.
- Your use of value to create a realistic sense of light and shadow throughout the creature’s background.
If you have any questions please ask me in class or email me as soon as possible.
