Project 1: Collage

In this assignment, we will be investigating the idea of composition by creating a collage using an underlying grid that you create. As a class we will come up with a few topics that this can be about, please choose one.

Goals

Each assignment will have a focus, these are the things I want you to concentrate on when creating your piece. These items will also be the things you will be graded on.

  • Composition of your piece.
  • Use of layers (you need at least 8 including your grid).
  • Understand adjustment layers and use at least one in your project.
  • Learn how to properly and cleanly select and copy objects from one image to another.

What you’ll need to do

  1. Draw a composition grid using one of the techniques described by either in Photoshop or in your sketchbook which will need to be scanned in.
  2. Create a new layer (Shift-Ctrl-N (Mac) or Shift+Ctrl+N (PC))
  3. Either find a backdrop that fits your grid or construct one and add it to a new layer.
  4. Add additional layers with images you’ve gotten from the web using the grid to guide you making sure to pay attention to both composition and unity.
  5. Edit the project further using the filters and adjustments which will be introduced later in this project.

Grading requirements

You will need the following to show you understand how to use the techniques shown in class. Not using these will result in a lower grade.

  • Properly named as shown in the naming section at the top of this page
  • At least 6 layers (not including your grid and background)
  • At least 1 adjustment layer
  • The cleanliness of your layers including proper resolution and a lack of digital cruft from the copy and pasting procedure. (Please use the eraser sparingly as it will result in a loss of points)
  • The unity of the piece
  • The strength of the composition
  • The inclusion of your grid in the PSD file.
  • All Layers should be named.
